Viruses Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are the components of a virus?
Genetic material, Capsid, Envelope.
Why viruses are non-living?
They don’t reproduce, they don’t have metabolism, they do not respond to stimuli, they don’t grow in size, and they’re acellular.
What is a Lysic Cycle?
It’s a cycle in which virus infects the cell and then actively makes copies of itself. Newely created viruses then infect nearby cells.
What is the Lysogenic Cycle
It’s a cycle where virus integrates it’s genetic material into a cell, replicates with the cell and then waits until the right moment to start making copies of itself (e.g. until you’re immunosupressed).
What are 5 phases of Lytic cycle
Attachment, Penetration, Biosynthesis, Assambly, Lysis.
What is dormant stage?
It’s when the virus integrated it’s gen. mat. into a cell and waits until the right moment.
What is a host range?
It’s an ability of a virus to infect only certain cells.
How can viruses be host-specific?
Their specificity is identified by the surface proteins on the capsid. This protein should fit host cell receptor.
What are some shapes of the viruses?
Helical, Polyhedral, Complex, and Spherical.
