viruses 2.2 Flashcards
(11 cards)
virus
a small infectious particle that contains genetic material without a capsid
capsid
a protein coat that surrounds genetic material
bacteriophage
a virus that infects bacteria
epidemic
a large scale outbreak of disease in a particular region
pandemic
when an epidemic spreads over a widespread geographic region
5 characteristics of viruses
nonliving
no cytoplasm
dont produce energy
cannot grow
dont produce waste
4 structures of viruses
helixal/cylindrical
polyhedral
spherical
complex
viral reproduction describe
a virus enters the host cell and the viral dna or rna takes control of the cell. the cell copies the messed up genetic material and spreads the virus once the cell membrane is broken.
lysogenic cycle
a dormant stage in which the host cell continues ot grow and divide copying its own dna with the viral dna
lytic cycle
an active stage in which lysis occurs, rupturing the cell and releasing many new viruses
vaccines
weakened viruses or viral information is given to an individual to trigger an immune response, without causing infection. this allows the body to be prepared if it ever comes in contact with the real virus.
