Viruses in Dentistry Flashcards
(35 cards)
Papovaviruses are DNA or RNA?
DNA
HPV or human papillomavirus are the main cause of what?
skin warts
What % of people have or HPV in the oral mucosa?
40%
What do Adenoviruses induce?
latent infections of the tonsils, adenoids, and other lymphoid tissue.
Herpes viruses number what to what?
1-8
HSV 1,2 primary infections
include gingivostomatitis, mout lesions, genital herpes, herpetic whitlow- infection of fingers aquired by dentists from contamination, conjunctivitis, and encephalitis
HSV 1,2 recurrent infections
involves a reactivation of the virus in the trigeminal ganglion or sacral ganglia
HSV1 generally causes lesions where?
above the belt
HSV2 generally causes lesions where?
below the belt
Herpes Varicella and zoster ( HSV3)
Varicella is chicken pox, zoster is shingles
where does herpes zoster lie dormant?
trigeminal or dorsal root.
human herpes virus 4 is known as EBV which means?
Ebstain barr virus
after the primary infection where does the EBV virus hide?
B lymphocytes
What does EBV cause?
mononucleosis, burkitts lymphoma, oral hairy leukoplakia
what is is mononucleosis?
causes fever, tonsilitis, fatigue, splenomegaly. lymphocytosis
whats burkits lymphoma?
malignant tumor that spreads rapidly . Common in Africa with malaria
Human herpes virus 6 has affinity to what two cells?
T and B cells
where is HHV in oral cavity found?
saliva and salivary gland epithelium.
HV7 is what kid of virus?
T- lymphotrophic virus
HHV8 is a possible agent for what?
kaposis sarcoma
What does orthomyxoviridae cause? and how is this virus divided?
worldwide influenzas, Divided into subtypes A,B,C on the basis of antigenic properties of their major nucleocapsid protein (NP)and its viral envelope matrix protein(M)
The variations of the different orthomyxoviridae are due to what?
haemaglutinin ( H antigens) and neuraminidase ( N antigens)
What causes these variations?
antigentc drift and antigenic shift
Is paramyxoviridae RNA or DNA?
RNA
