.This suggests an fulfilled fundamental part of his life, which are books which they once shared, however the experience of discovery within their pages have been left wasted and lost of their once bright joy.

.This is effective as it makes clear that precious opportunities and memories that could have been shared together will go unfulfilled. It implies that something that should be sweet and life-enhancing is the exact opposite as it has lost its flavour and vitality.
