Q

Rods

A
  • Responsive to very low levels in light and are responsible for night vision.
  • No colour can be detected through rods.
  • Poor at processing fine details

Q

Cones

A

Responsive to very high levels of light (function poorly in darkness), detect colour and detail within an image
- Fine detail and colour vision

Q

Optic Nerve

A
  • Carries the visual information from the retinal to the Primary visual cortex in the occipital lobe of the brain via the thalamus
  • Axons of the ganglion cells that originate from the left side of each retina reaches the left visual cortex and the right side of each retina reaches the right visual cortex

Q

Cornea

A
  • The transparent, convex shape covering that protects the eye
  • Helps focus the light onto the retina

Q

Aqueous humor

A

-The liquid in between the
cornea and the lens where the light passes through
-helps maintain the shape of eyeball and provides nutrients such as oxygen to the eye and carries waste products

Q

Pupil

A
  • A black circle in the centre of the eye
  • the opening of the iris that controls the amount of light to enter the eye
  • In dim light, the pupil expands to let more light through, and vice versa in bright light

Q

Iris

A
  • Surrounds the pupil and give the eye colour

- A ring of muscle and control the contracting and expanding of the pupil

Q

Lens

A
  • Transparent, flexible convex structure located directly behind the pupil
  • Focuses light onto the retina
  • To do this, it has to adjust its size and this is done by the ciliary muscles
  • When viewing close objects, the lens bulges, but when seeing objects far away, the lens extends.

Q

Vitreous Humor

A
  • Where the light passing through the lens travels through to get to the retina
  • The jelly-like substance helps to maintain the shape of the eyeball and focus light

Q

Retina

A
  • Receives and absorbs light as well as processes images
  • The image comes in inverted and the brain flips it upright
  • Made of nerve tissue and neurons called photoreceptors
