Vital Signs Flashcards
(25 cards)
afebrile
normal body temp - without fever
apnea
periods during which there is no breathing
auscultatory gap
period of time when no korotkoff sound is heard when deflating the pressure cuff when taking a BP
bradycardia
decreased respiratory rate
bradypnea
abnormally slow breathing
diastolic pressure
lowest pressure present on the arterial walls
dyspnea
difficult or labored breathing
dysrhythmia
irregular pattern of heartbeats
eupnea
normal, un-labored respirations
febrile
a person with a fever is said to be febrile
hyperthermia
high body temp
hypotension
below normal blood pressure, lower than 90/60
hypothermia
Low body temp
karotkoff sounds
sounds listen to when assessing blood pressure
orthopnea
difficulty breathing, shallow, rapid respirations, may appear anxious
orthostatic hypotension
AKA postural hypotension - decrease in systolic blood pressure of greater than or equal to 20 mm HG, or decrease in diastolic BP of greater than or equal to 10 mm HG, within three minutes of standing
pulse
a throbbing sensation that can be palpated over peripheral artery
pulse deficit
difference between apical and radial pulse rates indicates that all of the heartbeats are not reaching the peripheral arteries or are too weak to be palpated
pulse pressure
difference between systolic and diastolic pressure
pyrexia
fever
systolic pressure
highest pressure, created during ventricular contraction
tachycardia
heart rate that is too fast, more than 100 beats per minute
tachypnea
increased respiratory rate
temperature
difference between the amount of heat produced by the body and the amount of heat lost to the environment
