Vital Signs & Body Mechanics Flashcards
What is vital signs?
It is the indicator of the body to maintain homeostasis.
Purpose of vital signs?
It provides baseline status of the patient Sa condition. diagnostic and therapeutic purposes
What are the 4 vital signs?
- temperature
- pulse rate
- respiratory rate
- blood pressure
What is temperature?
Balance between heat production.
Factors affecting body temp?
- time of the day
- emotions / crying
- gender / ovulation
- age / infant immature heat regulation
- Infection / fever can fight infections
- pregnancy / metabolism can increase body temp
- Drugs / like aspirin can lower temp
- Eating and digestion can rise temp
Normal temperature range?
34 to 36 = hypothermia /lower temp
36 to 37 = normothermia / normal temp
38 to 40 = pyrexia / fever
41 to 42 = hyperpyrexia / high fever
What is pulse?
Wave of blood created by the contraction of left ventricle.
Characteristics of pulse?
(QRRV)
- Quality
- Rate
- Rhythm
- Volume (strength or amplitude)
normal pulse range? in adult and newborn.
adult
• Bradycardia - Less than 60 beats per minute
• Normal pulse - 60 to 100 beats per minute
• Tachycardia - above 100 beats per minute
Newborn
• 120 to 150 beats per minute
What is respiratory rate?
Respiratory rate is the act of breathing, process of inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide.
One respiration is = ?
One respiratory cycle.
Normal respiratory rate? Newborn and adult.
- Newborn is 30 to 50
- For kids 16 to 22
- Adult is 12 to 20
What is Blood pressure?
One of the most important vital signs bcs it aids in diagnosis and treatment.
Normal blood pressure?
Newborn - 75/55
Kids - 90/55
Adult - 119/70 or 120/80
What is systolic?
Blood pressure is the highest.
