Vitreous Opacities Flashcards
(17 cards)
What are floaters?
Embryological remnants within the vitreous
or
vitreous humour breakdown with age
Why can a vitreous haemorrhage occur?
PVD with a retinal tear or pulling of retinal blood vessel wall
Trauma
DR
RVO
Systemic bleeding disorder
Macroaneurysm
Terson syndrome
What are the symptoms of a mild vitreous haemorrhage?
Sudden floaters
Diffuse blur
Poss VA change
What are the symptoms of a severe vitreous haemorrhage?
Severe vision loss
What test can check for underlying retinal detachment or tear in vitreous haemorrhage?
B-scan ultrasound
What is asteroid hyalosis?
Calcium pyrophosphate particles attached to vitreous fibrils
What are the signs of asteroid hyalosis?
White/yellow particles
Move with eye movements
Do not sink
Asx
Most unilateral
What is synchysis scintillans?
Cholesterol crystals from plasma cells or degraded RBC products as a result of chronic vitreous haemorrhage
What are the signs of synchysis scintillans?
Golden-brown flat particles
May also be in AC
Particles sink
What is amyloidosis?
Extracellular fibrillary protein deposits which are usualy around blood vessels and can attach to the posterior lens surface
What are the characteristics of amyloidosis?
Can be uni or bilateral
Can be local or systemic
What is the treatment for amyloidosis?
Vitrectomy (if dense and causing VI)
What is a vitreous cyst?
Non-pigmented cyst in vitreous
What are the characteristics of a vitreous cyst?
Can float freely but may be attached to the disc
Can be congenital
If acquired, caused by trauma, inflammation or other pathology
When is a vitreous cyst treated?
If sxs are affecting px
What is persistent fetal vasculature?
Hyaloid vessel remnants
What are the signs of persistent fetal vasculature?
Mittendorf dot on posterior lens surface
Bergmeister papilla (tuft at disc)
Congenital vitreous veil
