(21 cards)
1.DESCRIBE LAYERS OF THE SKIN NAMES & FUNCTIONS
1.Epidermis
2.Dermis
SKIN FUNCTIONS: sensation, protection, thermoregulation, and secretion. Stores fats & Glucose, manufactures vitamin D.
A. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE DERMIS W/AGE?
Becomes more fragile.
2a. STRATUM CORNEAUM
Forms the outermost layer of the epidermis.
Consists of dead cells converted to protein. This layer is the physical barrier that provides protection.
2b. STRATUM LUCIDUM
Contains cells that are transparent & flat
2c. STRATUM GRANULOSUM
Consists of 2 or 3 layers of flattened cells
2d. STRATUM SPINOSUM
Consists of several layers of prickly or spiney shaped cells
2e. STRATUM GERMINATIVUM
Deepest layer. Regenerative layer
- WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MELANOCYTES & MELANIN?
Melanocytes are responsible for producing skin color.
Melanin Is the variations in skin color.
- WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE DEGREES OF BURN?
First degree burns involve just the epidermis.
Second degree burns involve both the epidermis & dermis.
Third degree burns the epidermis & dermis are completely destroyed.
5.WHAT IS HAIR COMPOSED OF? WHAT PARTS ARE VISIBLE?
Hair is composed of cuticle, cortex & the medulla.
The shaft is the visible part of the hair.
5a. EXPLAIN GOOSEBUMPS?
Goosebumps happen when the arrector pili muscle contracts involuntary & it pulls on the hair follicle.

Salt
- WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SWEAT GLANDS & WHICH IS MOST COMMON?
Eccrine & Aprocrine sweat glands.
Most common is eccrine.
- DEFINE CALLUS?
Thickened area of the skin that results from excess friction.
WHAT IN THE SKIN PROTECTS US FROM THE ULTRAVIOLET RAYS OF THE SUN?
Melanin
WHAT ARE THE ERRECTOR PILLI MUSCLES?
Bundle of smooth muscles that attach to a hair follicle
WHAT IS SEBUM?
Oil substance that helps lubricate the surface of our skin
WHAT HAPPENS TO OTHE DERMIS IN OUR ELDERLY THAT CAUSES THEM TO BE MORE SENSITIVE TO THE COLD?
poor blood circulation
WHAT IS THE ORDER OF THE LAYERS OF THE SKIN?
- Stratum corneum
- stratum LUCIDUM
- stratum granulosum
- Stratum SPINOSUM
- Stratum germinativum
