Constructivism
Political identities are malleable. Suggests that we think of identity as an evolving political process.
ex) French and German people differed from national beliefs that originated recently.
Gender
Distinguishes the characteristics between men and women
ex) Women are born to become mothers and men are born to become a father
Liberal Political Interests
An attitude favoring gradual political change
ex) Liberals usually aspire for political change, they want to go forward in political matters. Bernie Sanders.
Conservative Political Interests
An attitude that favors preserving things are way they are, or even reversing recent political changes.
ex) Donald trump is an extreme conservative.
Social Movement
Organized, sustained, and collective efforts that make claims on behalf of members of a group.
ex) LGBT
Head of State
A person who represents a country. This person is usually the head of the government in a country.
ex) Barack Obama of the United States
Oligarchy
A small group of people, usually the political elite, decides who should be a leader of a country.
ex) Ancient Rome
Single-Party Regime
A country that is ruled by one political party. Only one party exists and the making of new ones is forbidden
ex) China
Military Regime
A non-democratic system ruled by top members of the armed forces
ex) First Junta
Junta
A group of leaders of a military regime
ex) the Russian media refers to the Ukrainian interim government as a junta
Theocracy
A system of government in which priests rule in the name of God or a god
ex) Saudi Arabia
Personalistic Regime
Political power passes within the dictator’s family.
ex) Ancient Rome starting with Augustus
Regime Change
The replacement of one administration or government by another, especially by means of military force
ex) Russian Revolution
Neighborhood Effect
Explains the tendency of a person to vote in a certain way based on the influences of the people living in the the same neighborhood or land area
ex) Donald Trump is the top candidate for the state of Iowa
Class Consciousness
awareness of one’s place in a system of social classes
ex) Someone who knows that they are a part of the middle class
Cultural Identity
Part of a person’sself-perception and is related to nationality, ethnicity, religion, social class, generation, locality or any kind of social group that has its own distinct culture.
ex) The way people dress, type of food thats eaten, the way people wear their hair etc.
Race
A category of people who share biologically transmitted traits
ex) “White” “African American” “Latino”
Ethnicity
A shared cultural heritage
ex) “Mexican” “Swedish” “Russian”
Political Cleavage
National, ethnic, and religious divisions that affect political allegiances and policies
ex) State v Church or Land v Industry
Primordialism
The argument which contends that nations are ancient, natural phenomena
ex) The Rwanda Genocide. The Hutu group felt that they should kill their ethnic neighbor, the Tutsi, because of ethnic differences that made the Hutu “better”
Interest Groups
A group, loosely or tightly organized, that is encourages or prevent changes in public policy without trying to be elected
ex) National Association of Manufacturers (NAM)
Pluralism
A system in which two or more states, groups, principles, sources of authority, etc., coexist.
ex) The city of Bethlehem where people from all religions coexist
Corporatism
An ideology where society and economy of a country should be organized into major interest groups and representatives of those interest groups settle any problems through negotiation and joint agreement
ex) Ancient Greece developed early concepts of corporatism
Political Party
A group of people who come together to participate in elections and hold power in the government
ex) The United State’s Democratic and Republican parties
