What is Anthropology?
The study of origins and development of people and their societies
Artifacts
Remains left by humans; Anything that humans have tampered with; a human made object
Culture
The way of life of a society, which is handed down from one generation to the next by learning and experience.
Archaeology
The study of people and cultures through material remains.
Paleolithic Age (Period)
The era of prehistory that lasted from at least 2 million B.C (E) to about 9000 B.C (E); also called the old stone age.
Neolithic Age (Period)
The final era of prehistory, which began about 9000 B.C (E)- 2200 B.C (E); also called the new stone age.
Technology
The skills and tools people use to reach their basic needs or wants (The ways in which people apply knowledge.)
Homo Sapiens
Modern humans after homo erectus- Biological species that modern humans belong in.
Nomads
Person who moves place to place in search of food, shelter, and other resources (A member of a group with no permanent home , they wander from place to place in search of shelter, food, and water.)
Hunter-Gatherers
A member of a nomadic group whose food supplies are important, so they hunt and gather food to survive.
Primary Source
First account information; They were there!
Secondary source
They heard about it from a first hand account.
Neolithic revolution
The period of time during which the introduction of agriculture lead people to transition from nomadic to settled life. 8000 B.C (E) - 3000 B.C (E)
Animism
The belief that spirits and forces live within animals, objects, or dreams.
Steppes
Sparse, dry, treeless grassland.
Domesticate
To tame animals and adapt crops so they are best suited to use by humans.
Civilization
An advanced stage of human society marked by a well-organized government and high levels of culture, science, and industry. They must have recorded history

Believing in many gods (Belief in many gods)
Artisan
A skilled craftsperson
Traditional economy
Undeveloped economic systems that rely on customs and tradition
Scribes
in ancient civilizations, a person specially trained to red, write, and keep records. (Professional record keepers)
Pictographs
A simple drawing that looks like the object it represents.
Cuneiform
In the ancient middle east, a system of writing that uses wedge-shaped marks. Sumerians in mesopotamia.
Barter economy
Economic system in which one set of goods or services is exchanged for another - a form of trade really.
