Imperialism
One country’s domination over another country’s economic, political, and cultural institutions
Mercantilism
A policy followed by European imperial powers from the 16th to the 19th century. In colonies, trade was strictly controlled to benefit the economy of the imperial powers
Capitalism
An economic system that advocates free trade, competition, and choice as a means of achieving prosperity.
Apartheid
An Afrikaans word that refers to a policy of segregating and discriminating against non-whites in South Africa
Ethnocentrism
A word that combines “ethnic” and “centre”. It refers to a way of thinking that centers on one’s own race and culture. Ethnocentric people believe that their worldview is the only valid one.
Eurocentrism
A form of ethnocentrism catering to western society (Europeans). Used this to justify their “civilization” of other nations.

The reduction in or loss of Industries
Industrial Revolution
The period between about 1750 and 1850, when work became mechanized and began to occur in factories. The Industrial Revolution brought about economic, social, and cultural change, as well as urbanization.
Industrialization
The process of transforming the economy of a nation or region from a focus on agriculture to a reliance on manufacturing (the development of industries).
Genocide
The mass killing of human beings, especially a targeted group of people.
Depopulation
A reduction in population caused by natural or human-made forces
Reconciliation
Refers to efforts to address and repair relationships between groups or nations that have experienced conflict, injustice, or division.
- Acknowledging wrongdoings, seeking forgiveness, promoting healing and long-term peace, and fostering a sense of justice and unity.
Inter generational trauma
Trauma that is transmitted from one generation to the next. Includes things like violence, discrimination, forms of adversity (abuse, emotional detachment). It can impact the identity, worldview, and emotional health of future generations.
Exploitation
The action of or fact of taking advantage of and treating someone unfairly in order to benefit from their work. Ex: Belgium’s exploitation of the Congolese people and their country’s natural resource, rubber.
Colony
A country or area under the full or partial political control of another country, typically a distant one (overseas) and occupied by settlers from that country.
Colonialism
The practice or policy by which one nation exerts control over another territory or people, often for economic, political, and social gain.
Protectorate
A type of political agreement where a state/territory (typically weaker) is placed under the protection or control of a stronger state, often managing their foreign affairs, defense, and sometimes other governmental affairs. Usually benefits protector.
Confederation
A union or alliance of independent states, regions, or groups, that come together for a common purpose while retaining their individual sovereignty (usually having more power individually than the central authority).
