Gutter
Space in between 2 columns of a text
Drop Cap
When the first letter is expanded and it drops below multiple lines
Initial Cap
When the first letter is made huge but it stays on the first line
Serif
When the lettering has what is called a “Foot”, sans serif does not have any “Feet” (Need a diagram for final)
Sans Serif
Has no “feet” (Need a diagram for final)
X - Height
The height of any lowercase x in any font
Baseline
The line where the text sits on top of (diagram needed for final)
Widow
on line of text, it is where one word is sitting on a line by itself
Kerning
letter spacing, the spacing between individual letters in a word
counter
The open area that is inside of a letter some examples of letters that have counters are, a,b,d,e and Not y, c, v
Ascender
when a lowercase letter reaches above the x-height, for example d reaches above x (dx) (Diagram needed for final)
Descender
The opposite of ascender, when the text reaches below the baseline instead of the x-height. (xq) (Diagram needed for final)
Leading
the space in between the LINES of text, not in-between the letters or words but vertically going from baseline to baseline.
Flush left text
Text that sits on the left side of the page (Diagram needed for final)
Justified text
text that sits on both sides of the page, reaching a solid line on both the left and the right side of the page evenly. (Diagram needed for final)
Ladder effect
The effect that occurs where there are to many hyphenated words in a row in a block of text.
Di- cut
A shape cut out of a piece of paper, can be used for multiple purposes. Including creating cool designs to see through to the next page of a magazine or booklet of some sort.
Bleed
when art or color goes off of the page, in a sentence. when art or color “bleeds” off of the page.
Rule of Thirds
the four spots on 4 lines that intersect, where the viewers eyes always go to first on a page. it can be used to help create design layouts. (Diagram needed for final)
CMYK
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and black. You use THIS color formation for printing and NOT rgb
RBG
Red, Blue, Green. This color formation is used for online art only, NEVER for printing.
