Independent Clause
An independent clause states a full thought and can stand alone as a sentence.
Discourse
Discourse refers to the use of spoken or written language in a social context.
Graphophonemic Knowledge
Graphophonemic knowledge is a student’s ability to connect written letters to their phonemes. Identifying and counting individual graphemes requires students to use graphophonemic processing.
Phonology
Phonology is the study of the patterns of sounds in a language.
Morphology
Morphology is the study of words, how they are formed, and their relationship to other words in the same language. It analyzes the structure of words and parts of words, such as roots, prefixes, and suffixes.
Modal Verb
Modal verbs express possibility, permission, ability, etc. but “hasn’t” is describing whether or not something has occurred.
English Discourse
American English discourse is very linear, meaning a thought tends to be developed by following a pattern similar to that of an outline.
Minimal Pair
Minimal pairs are two words that differ only in a single sound. Chew and too differ in their initial consonant sound
circumlocution
Circumlocution is the use of many words to describe a word that a student doesn’t know in English. In this example the student doesn’t know the word “gravy,” so he describes it as “the brown sauce that you put on top of the turkey.”
During Pre-Production Stage
During the pre-production stage, students are often silent as they take in new language. Speaking with classmates should not yet be the focus.
