What is variability ?
Differences/how things differ
What are descriptive stats?
Description of the data collected.
What are inferential stats?
Use the data to say describe the large picture.
What if data?
Any collected information.
What is a population?
The group you are interested in.
What is a sample?
A subset of a population, often used to make inferences of the population.
What is a parameter?
A numerical summary of a population.
What is a statistic?
A numerical summary of a sample.
What is a census?
Information gathered on every member of the population.
What are random variables?
When people are randomly chosen from a list, factors such as hair color, height, weight, and any other data not pertaining to the survey are random variables
What is a quantitative variable?
Variables that are numeric like: height, age, number of _____ sold, scores
What is a categorical variable?
Variables that fit into a category: hair color, music choice, gender, yes or no responses
What is quantitative data?
The actual numbers gathered from each subject: 211 lbs, 67 beats per minute.
What is categorical data?
The actual individual categories from a subject like “blue” or “male”
What is a random sample?
When you chose a sample by rolling dice, flipping a coin, or other REAL RANDOMLY generated samples.
What is frequency?
How often something occurs.
Data and datum.
Datum is the singular form of data.
What is a frequency distribution?
A table or chart that shows how often certain values or categories occur in a data set.
What is meant by relative frequency?
The PERCENT of time something comes up (frequency/total)
What is meant by cumulative frequency?
You add up the frequencies as you go.
What is relative cumulative frequency.
The added up percentages. These will always end at 100%
What is the mean?
The average that is used in calculations.
What is the median?
The middlest number, it splits the area in half
What is the mode?
The most common datum in a data set
