Anatomy
The study of a structure of an organism and the relationships of its parts
Physiology
The study of the functions of living organisms and their parts
Homeostasis
Relative consistency of internal environment
Anatomical Position
The body standing erect with arms at the sides and palms forward
Superior
Towards the head, above a part
Inferior
Towards the feet, below a part
Anterior
In front of
Posterior
In back of
Medial
Towards the midline
Lateral
Away from the midline
Proximal
Towards nearest to the trunk
Distal
Away from or farthest from the trunk
Superficial
Near surface of body
Deep
Farther away from the surface of body
Mid-Sagittarius Plane
Divides body into two equal halves
Frontal Plane (Coronal)
Divides the body or any of its parts into posterior portions
Transverse Plane
Divides the body or any of its parts horizontally into upper and lower portions
Positive Feedback Loop
Not common in body, do not oppose change, instead pushing internal environment to amplify change; examples include process of childbirth and process of blood clotting
Negative Feedback Loop
Common in the body, oppose change to internal environment in an effort to return to homeostasis; example when you become cold your body will begin to shiver to try to warm itself
