Consciousness
A person’s awareness of himself or herself and his or her environment
Altered state of consciousness
A state characterized by bizarre, disorganized, or dreamlike thought patterns
Minimal consciousness
Describes a relatively frangmented connection between self and environment in which a person might respond to a stimulus without being aware of it at a more thoughtful level
Full consciousness
A state of consciousnes in which a person is aware of his and her own environment and also is aware of his or her mental state and is able to provide information
Self consciousness
The most self-aware state of consciousness; it allows a person to focus on his or her individual self
Restrictive function
An asoect of consciousness that allows people to exercise selective attentiom, or a conscious focus on one stimulus or perception at a given time
Selective storage function
Allows people to selectively analyze, interpret, and act on stimuli
