North and Western Europeans. Speak English at least as a second language. Considered “good” immigrants.
Old immigrants
Southern and Eastern Europeans. Most of them didn’t speak English, so people thought they weren’t intelligent. Considered “bad” immigrants.
New immigrants
1892, all immigrants coming through the east came through here. First point where Americans showed how biased and racist they are
Ellis Island
If immigrants didn’t pass their physicals, they got put here. It was a time of isolation.
Quarantine
Stopped all Chinese immigration. Chinese= everyone from Asia except the Japanese. The immediate family could come over and complete the family that was already in the U.S.
Chinese Exclusion Act
Agreement between president Theodore Roosevelt and the emperor of Japan. Roosevelt wasn’t going to allow the Japanese men into the country, but the women were still allowed.
Gentlemen’s Agreement
Caused by gentlemen’s agreement. All immigrants coming through the west coast had to come through here. Same thing as Ellis Island but it was in San Fransisco
Angel Island
A Mexican ghetto in the United States. Welcomed into the southern states because they were cheap labor.
Barrio
Mestizos, Mexicans, and Americans try to build a friendship (camaraderie). Mexican immigrants were always allowed.
Mutualista
Any Indian who would leave the reservation willingly would be granted immediate citizenship
Indian citizenship act
An educational process for the whites to learn about red culture. One of the most unsuccessful hints that ever happened for the Indians
Society of American Indians
“Know Nothing” political party, WASP. Any person born in the US who perceives immigrants as a threat.
Nativist
Nativist lobbyists go try to get Congress to pass literacy tests.
Immigration restriction league
US citizens (mostly nativists). Teaching people proper American cultural ideas. 100% social Darwinism
Americanization
Storage hole beneath the deck of a ship; refers to freight.
