Vocab: Physics SL Flashcards
1
Q
Heat
A
- Transfer/change in thermal energy due to difference of temperature.
- Heat is not something an object has, but something that an object gets or gives up.
2
Q
Temperature
A
- Measure of average kinetic energy of molecules of a substance.
- Temperature is property that determines direction of thermal energy transfer between two bodies in thermal contact.
3
Q
Thermal Equilibrium
A
- The state of no net thermal energy transfer between objects
- Occurs once the objects have the same temperature.
4
Q
Thermal Energy
A
Energy contained in an object due to the random kinetic energy and potential energy of the molecules.
5
Q
Absolute Zero
A
- The lowest temperature possible (-273.16°C or zero kelvin)
- Kelvin is the absolute thermodynamic temperature scale.
6
Q
Specific Heat Capacity (C)
A
- Amount of thermal energy required to raise temperature of an object by 1K.
7
Q
Specific Heat Capacity (per kg)
A
- Amount of thermal energy required to raise temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1K (or Celsius).
8
Q
Evaporation
A
- Process in which faster-moving molecules escape from the surface of a liquid.
- This results in a cooling of the liquid.
9
Q
Boiling
A
- Process in which liquid changes into a gas at the constant temperature of boiling point.
10
Q
Specific Latent Heat
A
- Amount of thermal energy required to change the state of 1kg of a substance at a constant temperature and pressure
- SLH of fusion is solid to liquid; SLH of vaporization is liquid to gas.
11
Q
Conduction
A
- Process in which heat energy is transferred by adjacent molecular collisions throughout a material medium.
- The medium itself does not move.
12
Q
Convection
A
Process by which heat is transferred by the actual mass motion of a fluid (gas or liquid) due to difference in density.
13
Q
Radiation
A
Process in which energy is transferred by electromagnetic waves (require no medium to propagate)
