When the chief and his heir fled Cuzco, a younger brother named Cusi Yupanqui stayed to defend the city. He defeated the invaders and became Cuzco’s new king in 1438.
Cusi was renamed Pachacuti, which means “earth shaker” or “he who turns the world upside down”.
During his rule, Pachacuti began a series of conquests and alliances that turned the Inca from a minor chiefdom into a powerful empire.
