Vocabulary Flashcards
(13 cards)
Ion
A positively or negatively charged atom or group of atoms.
Acid
An acid is a substance that forms hydrogen ions H+ when dissolved in water and acid, any substance that in water solution tastes sour or feel sticky to touch.
Base
A base is a substance that forms hydroxide ions OH- when dissolved in water and any substance that in water solution is slippery to the touch, tastes bitter, changes the colour of indicators.
Chemical Reaction
A chemical reaction is a process that leads to the chemical transformation of one set of chemical substances to another.
Chemical Equation
A representation of a substance using symbols showing the number of atoms or ions of each element in the compound
Reactants
A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction.
Products
A product is the substance that is formed as the result of a chemical reaction.
Neutralisation
Acid + Base = Salt + Water
A neutralization reaction is a chemical reaction between an acid and a base that forms a salt and water as products.
Precipitation
A precipitation reaction is a chemical reaction between two dissolved substances that forms one or more solid products.
Reaction Rate
Reaction rate is how fast reactants change into products in a chemical reaction.
Concentration
How much solute is dissolved in a given volume of solution.
Catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without being consumed in the process.
Temperature
Temperature is the measure of hotness or coldness expressed in terms of any of several scales, including Fahrenheit and Celsius.
