What is culture?
The body of material traits, customary beliefs, and social forms that together constitute the distinct tradition of a group of people.
What is a habit?
A repetitive act that a particular individual performs, such as wearing jeans to class every day.
What is a custom?
A repetitive act of a group, performed to the extent that it becomes characteristic of the group.
What is folk culture?
Traditionally practiced by small groups living in isolated rural areas.
What is popular culture?
Found in large, diverse societies that share certain habits despite differences in other personal characteristics.
What is material culture?
The aspect of social reality grounded in the objects and architecture that surround people.
What is nonmaterial culture?
Refers to the nonphysical ideas that people have about their culture, including beliefs, values, rules, norms, morals, language, organizations, and institutions.
What is cultural identity?
Feeling of belonging to a group.
What is a taboo?
A restriction on behavior imposed by religious law or social custom.
What is folk music?
Music that originates in traditional popular culture or that is written in such a style. Folk music is typically of unknown authorship and is transmitted orally from generation to generation.
What is folklore?
The traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community, passed through the generations by word of mouth.
What is cultural landscape?
A term used in the fields of geography, ecology, and heritage studies, to describe a symbiosis of human activity and environment.
What is acculturation?
Assimilation to a different culture, typically the dominant one.
What is assimilation?
Process in which a minority group or culture comes to resemble a society’s majority group or assume the values, behaviors, and beliefs of another group whether fully or partially.
What is an ethnic enclave?
A geographic area with high ethnic concentration, characteristic cultural identity, and economic activity.
What are cultural components?
The set of practices, forms of social, artistic and political expression, traditions, customs and regionalisms that characterize a society and distinguish it from others.
What is cultural diffusion?
The spreading out of culture, culture traits, or a cultural pattern from a central point.
