Vocabulary Flashcards
(26 cards)
Hypothesis
Single unproven assumption or idea which attempts to explain why something happens
Theory
A set of hypotheses that ties together a large number of observations of the real world
Law
Describes what happens if a known situation occurs, does not predict or explain why
Physical property
A property that can be found without creating a new substance ex. Density, colour, hardness, and melting temperature
Chemical property
The ability of a substance to undergo chemical reactions and change into new substances ex. Hydrogen’s ability to burn in air and produce water
Extensive property
A physical property which depends on the amount of the substance present ex. Mass, volume, length, shape, time required to dissolve a solid
Intensive property
A physical property which depends solely on the nature of the substance ex. Density, melting temperature, smell, colour, electrical conductivity, hardness
Malleability
The ability to be rolled or hammered into thin sheets
Ductility
The ability to be stretched or drawn into wires
Lustre
The manner in which a solid reflects light
Viscosity
The resistance of a fluid to flow
Diffusion
The intermingling of fluids as a result of motion within the fluid
Vapour
The gaseous material formed by the evaporation of a substance
Homogenous substance
A substance consisting of only one phase
Heterogenous substance
A substance consisting of more than one phase ex. Pencil, human
Pure substance
A substance that is homogenous and has an unchangeable composition ex. Sugar, water, copper, iron
Mixture
Multiple types of molecules
Mechanical mixture
Heterogenous mixture of two or more substances ex. Gravel, pencil
SOLUTION
Homogenous mixture of two or more substances
Solvent
The component in a solution that is greater
Solute
The component in a solution that is the smaller quantity
Compound
A pure substance made up of two or more types of atoms, but a SINGLE TYPE OF MOLECULE
Evaporation
Boiling away the liquid in a solid in liquid solution, leaving the solid
Distillation
Heating a liquid-in-liquid solution to book away the liquid with the lower boiling temperature, which is turned into vapour and passed through a system that cools it and turns it back into liquid
