Conflict
A struggle between opposing forces. Can be internal or external.
Foreshadowing
A writer’s use of hints or clues to suggest events that will occur later in the story
Simile
A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things, using the word “like” or “as”.
Metaphor
A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two things that are basically unlike but have something in common.
Complication
An additional factor or problem introduced into the rising action of a story to make the conflict more difficult.
Author’s Purpose
To express thoughts or feelings, to inform or explain, to persuade, to entertain.
Author’s Perspective
Point of view, unique combination of ideas, values, feelings, and beliefs that influences the way the writer looks at a topic.
Termination
An end, limit, or edge.
Immolation
Death or destruction.
Impunity
Freedom from penalty or harm.
Repose
To lie dead or at rest.
Subside
To decrease in amount or intensity, settle down
Preclude
To make impossible, especially by taking action in advance
Uncanny
So remarkable as to seem supernatural.
Reconnoiter
To make a preliminary inspection.
Singularity
Something peculiar or unique.
Superannuated
Obsolete with age.
Veneer
To cover with a thin layer of material.
Gamut
An entire range or series.
Heresy
An action or opinion contrary to what is generally though of as right.
