Articulatory phonetics

Syllable
A unit of speech
Monosyllabic
A word with only one syllable
Onset
Consonants that occur before a rhyme within a syllable
Rhyme
A vowel and any consonants that come after it
Nucleus
The vocalic part of rhyme
Coda
the section of a syllable that consists of any final consonants
Monophthongs
simple vowels composed of a single configuration of the vocal tract
Diphthongs
complex vowels composed of a sequence of two difference configurations
Segments

Features that “ride on top of” other segmental features. (length, intonation, tone and stress)
Length
The duration of speech sound
Intonation
The pattern of pitch movements across a stretch of speech
Pitch accents
a change in fundamental frequency in the middle of an utterance
Phrase tone
grouping words into linguistic units called phrases.
Tone
The pitch at which the syllables in a word are pronounced
Stress
A syllable that is more prominent than an unstressed one.
Tone languages
languages that emphasize the pitch at which the syllables in a word are pronounced (tone)
