- Argumentative Text
A type of text in which the author states and supports a position or claim.
- Claim
the writer’s position.
- Evidence
various types of proof used in an argument to support a claim.
- Audience
the person or people the author intended to read the text, the reader.
- Counterclaim
challenges the argument by addressing the position of someone who may not agree with it. (opposing viewpoint)
- Rebuttal
response that shows readers why the opposing viewpoint is wrong.

the overall feelings or emotions that are created in the reader.
- Voice
the style, personality, and word choice of a writer.
- Hyperbole
an extreme exaggeration.
- Emotional appeal
authors appeal to the readers emotions.
- Stereotype
a generalized belief about a person or category of people.
- Rhetorical device
patterns of words that stress certain ideas and stir readers’ feelings; shows correct reasoning.
- Logical fallacies
language that shows faulty, incorrect reasoning.
- Anecdote
people’s personal firsthand experiences, a short story.
- Fact
information that can be proven true.
- Opinion
an expression of a person’s feelings that cannot be proven.
- Example
something that may be offered to illustrate or explain.
- Credible
able to be trusted or believed.
- Biased
showing favoritism for or against something.
- Unbiased
showing no favoritism for or against something.
