Volcanoes Flashcards
(20 cards)
What are fault lines?
Fault lines are where two tectonic plates meet
What is the inner core?
The centre of the earth, solid, made of iron and nickel
What is the outer core?
Made up of molten magma, comes after the inner core, a liquid
What is the mantle?
Made of hard rock, comes after the outer core, 3000km thick
What is the earths crust?
Thick, makes up the layer of the world. After the mantle.
Two types: oceanic and continental
What is a constructive plate boundary?
2 plates of crust move apart from each other
Magma comes up through the crack and makes islands when it cools
What is a destructive plate boundary?
Oceanic plate is subducted under a continental plate, friction and pressure builds up and the oceanic plate can melt, rising up as magma and creating volcanoes
What is a conservative plate boundary?
Oceanic and continental plate boundaries slide against each other, pressure builds up as they get stuck and when they move the pressure is released as seismic energy and severe earthquakes are caused
What is a collision plate boundaries?
Continental plates collide, pushing up as they crush against each other and causing mountains
What does Pangaea mean?
All earth
What are the three main types of volcano?
Composite (strato), shield and dome
What is a volcano?
A mountain or hill, typically conical, having a crater or vent through which lava, rock fragments, hot vapour and has are or have been erupted from the earths crust
What is the ring of fire?
The ring of fire is an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where a large number of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur. In a 40,000km horseshoe shape, it is associated with a nearly continuous series of Oceanic trenches volcanic arcs, and volcanic belts and/or plate movements
Where is Merapi?
Merapi is in Indonesia, in the continent of Asia.
It is South of the Java sea and Weston Surabaya
It is in the island of Java
What are the SEE effects
?
Social - effects on the people around it
Economic- effects on the country and its economy
Environmental- effects on the natural environment
What plate boundary is the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano on?
On a constructive plate boundary
Where is the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano located?
It is located up North between Russia and Scandinavia
Where are composite volcanoes usually found?
On destructive plate boundaries
How are volcanoes formed?
Volcanoes are formed when magma from the earths upper mantle works its way up to the surface, where it erupts to form lava flows and ash deposits. Over time was the volcanoes erupts, it will get bigger and bigger.
What are tectonic plates?
Huge slabs of irregular shaped rock that make up the surface of the earth
