w-e-d and topo maps Flashcards
(26 cards)
mechanical
rocks are broken apart by physical processes
chemical
Chemical reactions to solve the rock or change them into different minerals
oxidation
- acid rain
* plant acid
erosion by water
Stream erosion
rain drops
wave erosion
erosion by wind
The cause is by the wind
erosion by glaciers
breaks off pieces of rock as it moves over it
glaciers
glaciers are large sheets of ice that forms as show is compacted over time
erosion by gravity
movement of sediment or rock downslope due to pull of gravity
deposition
The laying down of sediment that has been eroded
topographic map
A topographic map is a two dimensional model of the earths surface it is also known as a Contor map
contour line
contour line connects points of equal elevation
can also show a depression, crater, or sink hole on a map — shown by dashed Lina on the in side of a contour line
elevation
they show the elevation and shape of the land
relief
relief is the difference between high and low elevations
contour interval
The contour interval is the difference in elevation between each line the difference must be the same in all lines
index contour
usually every fifth line is printed darker and has an elevation printed on it
rules for contours
contour lines never cross
contours from closed loop even if not shown on the map
contours bend upstream when crossing a stream
The maximum possible elevation for uphill is one less then what then next Contor should be
steeper slope
contour lines are closer together
weathering
processes that works to breakdown rocks
gradual/gental slope
contour lines are farther apart
benchmark
a location whose exact elevation is known and is noted on a brass or aluminum plate. Benchmarks are shown on a map by an x with the letter BM written next to them.
map scale
indicates the distance on the map compared to the in the real world
- ) could be numerical
- ) or graphical
upstream
going against the flow of water ; going against the direction of the H2O is flowing from
deltas and alluvial fans
a fan shaped deposits at the mouths (ends) of the stream
flood plain
level strips of land on the sides of a rivers that are made of sediment that are deposited during flood
