w-e-d & topo maps Flashcards
(23 cards)
erosion
the movement of sediment from one place to another
deposition
laying down of sediment that his been eroded
chemical weathering
Dissolves or changes them into different minerials oxidation is acid rain and plant acid
mechanical weathering
rocks are broken apart by a physical process, growing plants, burrowing animals and freeze and thaw cycles
water erosion
- stream erosion- erodes the channel ( wider ) & erodes the bottom ( deeper )
- rain drop erosion- issue on farm land
- wave erosion- carries stuff out to sea also lakes
wind erosion
depends on size and speed
glacier erosion
large sheets of ice as snow is packed on over time // it picks up rock and moves it with it.
gravity erosion
movement of rock downslope due to the pull of gravity // aka mass wasting
delta and alluvial fans
fan shape deposited at the mouth of stream
flood plains
level strips of land on sides of river that are deposited during flooding
meander and oxbow lakes
meander- bend in river
oxbow- meander that gets cut off
topographic map
a two dimensional model of the earths surface // also known as a contour map
contour lines
elevation above sea level is shown using // connects points of equal elevation
relief
the difference between high and low elevation
contour interval
the difference between each line in elevation // the different must say the same between all lines
contour lines
never cross
contours
form closed loops // even if not shown on map
stuff
maximum possible elevation for a hill is one less than what the next contour should be
steeper slope
contour lines are closer together
gentle slope
contour lines are farther apart
benchmark
a location whose exact elevation is known // is noted on a brass or aluminum plate. they are shown on maps by a X with the letters BM written next to them
map scale
indicates the distance on the map compared the distance in the real world
weathering
process that works to breakdown rocks
