What are the five unifying themes of Biology
Organisation, Information, Energy and Matter, Interactions, Evolution
Define biosphere and name two aspects of it
It consists of life on earth and the places where life exists. Regions of land, bodies of water, sediments below ocean floor
Define ecosystem and name two things within an ecosystem
Consists of all living things in a particular along with all non-living components of the environment in which it interacts. Soil, water, atmospheric gases, light.
Define biological community and name two examples of one
The array of organisms inhabiting a particular ecosystem. plants, animals, mushrooms, fungi, bacteria.
Define species
A group whose members can only reproduce with other members of the group
Define populations
Consists of all the individual species living within the bounds of a specified area that interbreed with each other
Define organisms and provide two examples of one
Individual living things. animal, plant, fungus, bacterium
Define organs and name the three major organs of a plant
A body part that consists of multiple tissues and completes specific bodily functions. Leaves, stems, roots
What are tissues
a group of cells that work together, performing a specialised function
Define photo synthesis and where it occurs in a plant leaf
Photosynthesis is the process that converts light energy to the chemical energy of sugar. Occurs in the honeycombed tissues.
What does epidermis tissue do in plant leaves
Allows the entry of CO2 through pores, a raw material for sugar production
Define cell and the difference between a single cell and multicellular organisms
The cell is life’s fundamental unit of structure and function. A single cell performs all the functions of life. A multicellular organism features a division of labour among specialised cells
Define organelle and provide one example within plants
Organelles are the various functional components present in cells. Chloroplasts are an example of organelles.
Define molecule and provide one example of it
It is a chemical structure consisting of two or more units called atoms. Chlorophyll molecule (pigment that makes plants green and absorbs light during photosynthesis.
