W26/L8 Flashcards
(30 cards)
What is B1 aka?
Thiamin
What is B2 aka?
Riboflavin
What is B3 aka?
Niacin
Nicotinamide
What is B6 aka?
Pyridoxine
What is VitC aka?
Ascorbic acid
What compounds fall under Vit A?
Retinol
Retinal
Retinoid acid
Which vitamins are fat soluble?
A, D, E & K
What are good food sources of thiamin?
Vegemite
Wholemeal breads/fortified cereals
Buckwheat (soba noodles)
What are good food sources of riboflavin?
Vegemite
Milk/cheese
Fortified cereals
What are good food sources of niacin?
Vegemite
Wheat bran
Fortified cereals
What are good food sources of pyridoxine?
Vegemite
Nuts
Bananas
Fortified cereals
What are good food sources of biotin?
Brewer’s yeast
Cooked egg yolk
Soy beans
What are good food sources of folate?
Green leafy vegetables
Liver
Fortified cereals
What are good food sources of Vit B12?
Meat
Egg yolks
Cheese
(Mushrooms, only cause they tend to grow on mean-containing compost, and become “infected” with B12)
What are good food sources of Vit C?
Citrus fruits
Cabbage
What are good food sources of Vit A?
Lots of fruits & veg - especially carrots
Liver
(Derived from beta-carotene in vegetables, stored in the liver)
What is our source of Vit D?
It’s derived from cholesterol & requires UV light for synthesis, so technically it’s not a vitamin - we make it ourselves
What is a good food source of Vit E?
Seed oils
What is our source of Vit K
Produced by gut flora
What’s the biological role of biotin?
Co-enzyme that adds CO2 -> required for glucose, fat & AA biosynthesis
What’s the biological role of folate?
“one-carbon” metabolism
AA, fat, purines for DNA
What’s the biological role of Vit B12
Forms a coenzyme (with cobalt) important for folate metabolism & transalylations -> important for DNA synthesis
What are the biological roles of thiamin? (3)
Nerve function
CHO, protein and fat metabolism
Co-enzyme for pyruvate dehdrogenase -> is required for conversion of pyruvate to acetylCoA and all aerobic metabolism
What’s the biological role of riboflavin?
Electron carrier -> cofactor for TCA cycle
CHO, protein and fat metabolism
