Whats the unit for charge
Unit is known as the coulomb, C
1st Fundamental Law of Electric Charge
- Like charges repel, unlike (opposite) charges attract ExistING through an electric force
Explain why charged objects are attracted to neutral objects
Through electrostatic induction - the presence of a charged object causes a redistribution of electrons within the neutral object creating a temporary opposite charge leading to an attractive force
2nd Fundamental Law of Electric Charge
- Electric charge is conserved; cannot be created or destroyed
- Cannot just appear and disappear - must be continuity
- The net amount of electric charge produced in any process is zero
Coulomb’s Law
Themagnitude of the electrostatic forcebetween two point charges isdirectly proportional to the product of their chargesandinversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
What are electric fields
A field in which one charge affects another charge in its presence
Voltage
A measure of the difference in potential energy per unit charge between two points
Elementary Charge
Charge carried by a single proton or electron
Electron Volt
Defined as the energy gained by an elementary charge( proton or electron) as it moves through a potential difference of 1
what are Capacitors
Are composed of conducting plates with an insulating material in between
3 purposes of Capacitors
- They act as a temporary electrical energy source
- They act against power fluctuations in a circuit
- They act against electrical interference
What is dielectric
Adielectricis aninsulating material— that meansit doesn’t conduct electricity— but itcan be polarizedby an electric field.
It’s a material you put between the plates of a capacitor to increase how much charge the capacitor can storewithout allowing current to flow.
