Past: large coal fires, ancient smelly valour cooking stove, Bunsen burners.
Today: good insolation, radiators, air conditioning systems.

A

Past: Principal’s form in Clay for school trip, Christmas, Summer, bank holidays, sometimes on a sunny day Mr Maybin would say I think we will have a half day today.
Today: bank holidays, Christmas, Summer, Easter, Halloween.

What was discipline in the past and today?

A

Past: excellent, not a single major accident including pupil misbehavior, Getting hair cut because considered too long, the cane, detentions, expulsion writing lines.
Today: say please and thank you, greet people as they go by, respect other people, have good manners, don’t talk when the teacher is talking, only take out iPad if told to, be kind to others, help out each other.

What was food like in the past and today?

A

Past: in 1946 the school canteen fed 160 pupils everyday, two junior school boys crossed the border (Republic of Ireland) and sweets to sell to third years, rationing.
Today: canteen vending machines, sometimes they set up a cake stall, it is delicious, chip Friday, they sell hot and cold food at break time and lunch time, we use our finger prints to buy dinners, we are a nut free school.

What was the size of the school like in the past and today?

A

Past: they can all fit into a 40 seat bus and the rest into the principal’s car, it had fewer tan 100 students in 1931, 2 air raid shelters, located at Antrim Road, one main schoolroom split into 3 parts by wooden partitions, the school expanded during the 1960’s with an additional gym and science labs. Upper sixth did not have a centre, instead a room with a kettle, a table tennis table and a tape recorder advent to the staff room. Pupils could not snoop on teachers through a shared window and vice versa. Richard Wallace owned it.
Today: located at Clonevin Park, three leveled building, gigantic, over 1,100 students, large grounds, sixth form centre, Astro hockey pitches, they had to build a whole new bigger school in the 1970’s.

What was the uniform like in the past and today?

A

Past: sixth form girls would wear taken up skirts and white socks were rolled down, 1990’s there was ablution in the girls sixth form uniform, the old uniform could only be described as a wheelie bin blue (quite frankly it was awful).
Today: black shoes, black tights/ grey socks, grey skirt with two pleats/grey trousers, white shirt navy tie with a coloured stripe according to what house you are in, blazer, keep your hair neat and tidy. Boys and girls have different trimmings on their blazers, the design of the blazer now is only six years old.
