WaPNoL 2 Flashcards
(10 cards)
Principle of Superposition
“The resultant displacement of two or more waves at a point is equal to the vector sum of their individual displacements at that point”
Maxima
Waves meet with 0 degrees phase difference, resulting in constructive superposition occurs producing a point/region of maximum amplitude.
Minima
Waves meet with 180 degrees phase difference, resulting in destructive superposition occurs producing a point/region of minimum amplitude
Plane polarisation
Transverse waves are restricted to oscillate in one plane only and at right angles to the direction of energy transfer.
Diffraction
Spreading of a wave through a gap or around an obstacle. Maximum diffraction occurs when gap width = wavelength
Plane polarisation
When transverse waves are restricted to oscillate in one plane only, and at right angles to the direction of energy transfer.
Radiation flux / Intensity
The amount of power received per unit area
Work Function
The minimum energy needed to free a ‘delocalised’ electron from the surface of a metal
Photon
The ‘packet’ of energy carried by each electromagnetic wave
Ground state
The most relaxed and lowest energy state
