Dulce vs soldier
Opening:
- effects on soldiers which are dehumanising vs no need to grieve, evading horrors of war
- reducing masculinity of soldiers, against patriotism vs glorifying death
Middle:
- war causing struggles on individuals showing the soldiers’ feelings, subverts traditional ideas vs love for country pre fighting, masculinity
- war affecting those around not just the injured vs war as purifying
End:
- lack of respect in death vs death as a noble experience
- lies of patriotism exposed vs patriotic death with sights of heaven (looks at afterlife whilst dulce only on this life)
Structure:
- sonnet vs double sonnet, irony vs true patriotism
- alternating rhyme vs soft rhyme
- mostly iambic vs inconsistent iambic pentameter (dulce)

- image of soldier dying vs delivering news of such
- death effect on soldier vs effect on wife

- the rushed funeral of soldiers vs the soldier in the grave
- exposing patriarchy vs moving on
