Emotional Trauma
“His hands which did not tremble then but seem to now.”
His reaction to his past experiences indicate PTSD - even thoughts and images of war cause a physical reaction.
Isolation
“From an aeroplane he stares impassively at where he earns a living and they do not care.”
Ordinary people cannot understand the true depth of the agonies which he has witnessed - he is alone in his knowledge of these events.
Loss
“He remembers the cries of this man’s wife.”
In wars, ordinary people lose loved ones as a result of politics which are out of their control.
Change
“Home again to ordinary pain which simple weather can dispel, to fields which don’t explode beneath the feet of running children in a nightmare heat.”
The stark change of environments between the peace of the countryside and the heat of the chaos amongst a war torn country.
Love
“He remembers the cries of this man’s wife.”
Love cannot protect people from loss in wars - conflict is unfair and uncaring of who it consumes
Contrast

The word choice stresses how easily our problems can be solved, in contrast to the horrors of war which cannot be so easily cured.
Childhood Experiences

The suffering of these children and the consequences of the war will likely stick with them for the rest of their lives.
