Sibilance
Repetition of ‘s’ sounds in close succession- often harsh, smooth, or sickly
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds in close succession
Plosive
Repetition of ‘b’, ‘p’, ‘t’, or ‘d’ sounds in close succession- often aggressive
Sonnet
A poem, unusually about love, in 14 lines written in a formal rhyme scheme.
Blank Verse
Verse without rhyme, which is usually written in iambic pentameter.
Mood / Tone
The feelings created for the reader / by the author
Speaker
The voice of the poem
Volta
A turning point in a poem, often associated with sonnets.
Juxtaposition
The contrast of something with something else
Tricolon
Three words, phrases, or clauses in succession
Enjambment
The running over of a sentence from one line/stanza of the poem to another without closing punctuation
Internal Rhyme
Repetition of syllable sounds in one line
Caesura
A stop or pause in a line of poetry, caused by punctuation
Stanza Length
A stanza can be isolated (one line), a couplet (two lines), a tercet (three lines), a quatrain (four lines), a quintain (five lines), a sestet (six lines), a septet (seven lines), an octave (eight lines) etc.
Anaphora
Repetition of words at the start of lines or clauses
