What was the cause of the war against Denmark?
A dispute over the duchies of Schleswig-Holstein. In 1863, a new Danish King named Christian IX proposed the incorporation of the duchy Schleswig into Denmark. This angered the German confederation.
What did the German confederation do in response after hearing that Denmark wanted control of Schleswig
They appointed a German prince named Duke Frederick of Augustenburg as a rival candidate for the position of Duke of Schleswig Holstein.
What did Bismarck want to do with the Schleswig Holstein situation at first
Bismarck wanted to secure the two duchies for Prussia yet he did not want to provoke Austria by acting independently. He also didn’t want to see Schleswig Holstein occupied by an army of the German confederation.
What was Denmarks main mistake
To believe that Austria and Prussia wouldn’t cooperate with each other.
Did Austria have any interest in the region? Why did Austria then agree to join forces?
No, Austria had no direct interest in the region which was geographically much closer to Prussia. Austria agreed to join forces due to German prestigie, which meant that it couldn’t allow such an important issue to be solved without its involvement.
Was France likely to intervene in this war? Why?
France would mostly likely stay neutral and it had no reason to intervene, didn’t want any enemy’s, didn’t want to upset alliances especially Italy and had other priorities, it also poseed no direct threat or consequences from this war despite the outcome.
Why was Bismarck not worried about Britain intervening?
This was because Britain did not posses a large enough army and did not give importance to the outcome of the crisis as an interest.
Why was Russia not likely to help Denmark?
This was because in 1863, Bismarck gave diplomatic support to Tsar Alexander II during the January uprising in Poland, which helped improve the relationship between Prussia and Russia.
What did Denmark loose in April?
Denmark lost the fortress of Duppel after a ten day siege.
What did Prussia and Austria offer to Denmark? Did Denmark accept or refuse?
Prussia and Austria tried to offer an armistice to the partition of Schleswig yet Denmark refused.
Why did the Duke of Agustenburg not end up being the Duke of Schleswig Holstein?
Bismarck made sure this didn’t happen by presenting him with terms that would have made hin a puppet of Prussia, which included limiting Agustenburgs authority over the region and accepting itself as submissive to Prussia and Prussia as dominant and having more power than this region, the Duke wanted much more control and expected it to be an independent state. Bismarck then blamed the refusal on him.
Who ended up winning the war?
Fighting resumed in June where Denmark was eventually defeated ,the surrender of both duchies to Prussia and Austria.
What did Austria and Prussia do with Schleswig Holstein?
They ignored public nationalist opinion which wanted to see these duchies incorporated in the confederation under the Duke. Bismarck knew that Prussia wasn’t strong enough to fight Austria for the two duchies by force and was concerned about how countries would react internationally. Austria and Prussia made the Gastein convention, a temporary agreement where Holstein would be administrated by Austria and Schleswig by Prussia.
