Warwick at St Albans

A

After Henry VI’s recovery in 1455, Warwick and his father took up Arms in York’s support

The victory at St Alban’s on the 22nd May 1455 was due to the fierce energy with which Warwick assaulted and broke the Lancastrian Centre

He was rewarded with the important office of captain of Calais
He retained his post and was made Admiral in 1457

A

Warwick defeated the Lancastrians at Northampton on 10th July 1460 and took the king prisoner

Yorkist punishment in 1459

A

Parliament Devils Condemned Yorkist Lords as traitors in 1459

Henry was lenient and only attainted leaders and was willing to pardon those who submitted to him

Yorkists dismissed these sentences planning to return to England by Force

A

Henry placed Somerset as captain of Garrison and he tried to take Calais by Force

However, Warwick’s brother, Lord Fauconberg defended and defeated Somerset on the 23rd of April 1460

A

Warwick’s control over the Garrison and the King’s fleet was crucial as Henry was unable to defend the coast of England against invasion

Henry had to raise a replacement Navy by impressing men and ships

As these men were unpaid they were mutinous and were afraid to fight Warwick

Warwicks return to Calais - June 1460

A

June 1460 Warwick returned to Calais and with Fauconberg

They led a raid and destroyed a Lancastrian Fleet, securing the port for a Yorkist invasion

30th December 1460 - York and Salisbury were killed in Wakefield

17th February 1461 - Lancastrians routed Warwick and regain possession of the king

Warwick joins forces with Edward
They entered London unopposed on 4th March 1461
Edward becomes king

The same month Warwick and Edwards won a decisive victory over the Lancastrians in the Battle of Towton on 29th March 1461
