How should waste medication be stored?

A

It should be stored for a maximum of three months, and should not exceed 10 cubic meters.
The total accepted in 24 hours should not exceed 5kg or 5l.
Rturned medicine should be stored in secure containers in a designated area separate from medicines that are fit for use.
Needles and sharps should be kept in a sharps bin.
All confidential information should be removed or destroyed.
Tablets should not be de blistered.
Whole bottles of liquid should be placed in the waste container sealed to prevent hazardous mixing.

Can pharmacies accept waste drugs?

A

Yes, although what they can accept is different in Scotland from England and Wales.
In Scotland, a pharmacy can accept waste from members of the public, nursing and residential homes, but they cannot accept waste from other healthcare professionals.
