Q

define/ explain eutrophication

A

fertilizer run off contains high levels of nitrates for crop growth. nitrogen levels of run off results in algal bloom in rivers. blocks light into river. stops photosynthesis and no light and oxygen for other animals which kills them. loss of biodiversity and reduces water qaulity

Q

Explain 8 water availability factors

A
  1. construction of dams-negatives
    - people displaced
    - soil erodes
    - loss of biodiversity
    - evaporation
  2. destruction of wetlands- poor management
    - purify water
    - reduce floods/ droughts
    - store water
    - protect biodiversity
  3. wastage
  4. boreholes- more extracted- lower water table and deplete aquifer
  5. poor farming practice- overgraze, irrigation, ploughing on slope
  6. cost of water
  7. droughts and floods

4
Q

explain 4 water quality factors

A

domestic- detergents and sewage
industrial- thermal pollution( hot water kills organisms in rivers)
agriculture- fertilizers eutrophication
mining- acid water lowers water ph
