Water Flashcards

1
Q

Why is Water important to trees

A

Water is vital to trees. Large trees can absorb hundreds of liters of water a day, and as much as 95 percent of that water may be returned to the atmosphere through transpiration. Without sufficient soil moisture, a tree becomes water stressed and stops growing, and overall plant health can decline. Too much water in the root zone can cause tree decline as well. Maintaining optimal amounts of water inthe root zone is critical for tree health and growth

Q

Why is irrigation important in urban trees

A

Each tree species requires a different watering schedule and factors such as weather conditions, types of soil, drainage, and how water will be applied to have a healthy growing tree.

Q

Why too little or too much water for a tree is bad

A

A tree will grow slow, decline or die if consistent water is not applied

Lack of water can cause root loss, marginal leaf scorch, leaf drop, twig dieback, and plant death

Too much water because of over watering, bad drainage, high water table, or flooding can lead to root death, leaf yellowing, leaf loss, and crown dieback due to lack of oxygen and fertilizer uptake

Q

What do trees do to survive harsh conditions and environments

A

shed or drop their leaves or go dormant early and stay dormant longer in spring. Some trees control water loss by their leaf size, cuticle thickness, tiny leaf hairs that trap moisture and have sunken stomata that have a small air pocket for moisture control.

drought tolerant trees can take more water than others like, brisbane box, chinese flame tree, Redbuds, stone pines. But others like olives, california pepper, and palo verde will not tolerate it

Q

Problems with irrigation systems

A

Most yards are overwatered with these. You can spoil your plants. All plants in system will get watered off same valves

Q

Problems with spray sprinklers

A

they over spray everything, they spray tree parts and cause fungus, rot issues on trunks.

Q

Bubblers

A

work great for mature trees and new trees recently planted with good wells, they need to be adjustable ( black drip pipe with bubble head). May not work on slopes.

Q

Hand watering

A

***my favorite. Takes a lot of time and effort. Efficient and specific watering. Not for everyone. And I’m not recommending it.

Q

How mulch can be important for trees

A

enhance soil, fertility, soil structure as it decomposes), also good for erosion control slows down runoff, water retention, protects trees from trimmers, improves drainage by amending, grass shallow root types, reduces soil compaction, appearance

Q

Water Quality in San Diego

A

San Diego’s water has minerals and salts we have to flush/leached out with rain. Examples- Avocados

Q

Drainage is also important for water because why

A

depending on the soil’s physical characteristics

Lack of oxygen in the soil can, suffocate roots which leads to toxic compounds build up of toxic properties

17
Q

Importance of saturated and oversaturated soils

A

Over saturated soil can cause trees root rots, causing them to decline and lead to death. Saturated soils can stop the uptake of certain nutrients.

18
Q

Ways to improve drainage

A

Changing grade if possible
Planting in mounds or at higher grades.
Planting other plants to help suck up the moisture in area.
Maybe pruning trees to help dry out shadier spots in yard from big tree. Installing french drains if necessary. Adding liquid soil conditioners to open up soil pores like with liquid Gypsum products.
Maybe consider damp friendly plant and tree species if it’s more practical

change out soil completely***
