What is the distribution of water on the earth?
Total amount of water on the earth is 3% fresh and 97% salty.
Total amount of fresh water on earth:
1% on the surface – 30% groundwater – 69% frozen in ice caps and glaciers.
What do we use the water for?
70% in farming
19% in industry
11% for domestic use
What is an aquifer?
Aquifer are a natural underground rock structure that stores groundwater.
What is reservoirs?
an artificial or natural lakes, fed by rivers and streams.
What is water scarcity/stress?
When a country or place does not have enough water to meet the human demands.
What are the causes of water scarcity/stress?
Low rain fall
Large population
Overuse and wastage
What is Ogallala?
Ogallala is one of the worlds largest aquifer that lies between the great plains. It runs from Canada down to the middle of USA. It is the breadbasket of USA.
Why is Ogallala called fossil water?
Most of the water is 8000 years old. So its called fossil water. It has been trapped since the ice age.
What is fossil water?
Fossil water refers to groundwater that has been sealed into aquifers for thousands or millions of years, by changes in the rock structure.
List the states that shares Ogallala
Dakota Kansas
Nebraska Oklahama
Wyoming New Mexico
Colorado Texas
What was the original name of the Great Plains?
Dustbowl
Why was it called Dustbowl?
In 1930s in the USA, the Dustbowl were filled with fierce winds that carried dust from the dry soil, and droughts were frequent. Dust storms even reached New York.
What are the ways to tackle water stress?
Catch it as it falls Move it
Drip irrigation Desalination
Stop wasting it
Recycle it
What is drip irrigation?
Drip irrigation is the process where a long tube is spread across the crops dripping drops of water. This helps reduce water stress and overuse of water.
What is Desalination?
The process of turning salty water to fresh water.
