Water Flashcards
(7 cards)
Polarity
Where the molecule has regions of positivity and negativity due to electrons being closer to one atom (unequal sharing of atoms)
Hydrogen bonds
Bonds formed inbetween polar molecules due to the polarity
Weak bonds in small numbers
Characteristics of water
High boiling point Liquid at room temp (due to hydrogen bonds) High heat capacity Cohesive (mass flow) Surface tension
Solvency importance
Helps transport compounds in / out of a cell
Cohesion importance
Molecules stick together due to cohesions which means water can flow as a continuous stream (mass flow)
High heat capacity importance
Creates a stable environment for aquatic animals as allot of energy is needed to change temp.
Ice freezing importance
Creates an insulating layer above liquid water to maintain environment for organisms below
