Water Cycle Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is the water cycle?
The water cycle is the movement of water between the atmosphere, land, oceans, and living things.
What is a cycle?
A cycle is a continuous process.
What are the three states of water?
Liquid, Solid, and Gas
Referring to the water cycle, what is liquid?
Water
Referring to the water cycle, what is solid?
Ice
Referring to the water cycle, what is gas?
Water Vapor
How does water change state?
It can either heat up (absorbing energy), or cool down (releasing energy).
How does water absorb energy?
The water can melt from a solid to a liquid, or can change from a solid to a gas.
How does water release energy?
The water can either condense from a gas to a liquid, freeze from a liquid to a solid, or deposit from a gas to a solid.
What are the three ways water reaches the atmosphere?
Evaporation, Transpiration, and Sublimation
What happens to water in the atmosphere?
The water condensates, and precipitates
How is rain formed?
Rain is formed when the temperatures remain above 0 degrees Celsius for the entire trip throughout the atmosphere to the ground.
How is freezing rain formed?
Freezing rain is formed when the warm air bend is wide and only refreezes close to the ground.
How is sleet formed?
Sleet is formed when the warm air bend is narrow.
How is snow formed?
Snow is formed when the temperature in the Troposphere remains below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
How does water move on land and in the ocean?
Runoff, Infiltration, Ice Flow, and Ocean Currents
How are deep ocean currents formed?
Deep Ocean Currents are formed by very salty or cold water that is more dense than warm water.
What are some examples of how energy and matter are moved throughout the atmosphere, land, oceans, and living things?
- Water that evaporates from the ocean carries energy into the atmosphere
- Rivers can carry lots of sand, mud, and gravel
Why did we have snow on Wednesday?
The temperature in the Troposphere remained lower than 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
In our science lab, what happened when the water heated up?
The water evaporated and created tiny water droplets on the side of our bag.
How are hail and sleet different?
Hail occurs in warm weather while sleet occurs in cold weather.
What is runoff?
Runoff is the water that flows downhill because of gravity.
What is infiltration?
Infiltration is the process in which water seeps into the ground.
What is an ice flow?
Ice flow is glaciers that flow downhill.
