water distribution Flashcards
revision (16 cards)
what is an abiotic resource
all of the non-living things that are found in an area (water, oxygen, rocks)
what is a biotic resource
all the living things that are in an area (plants, animals)
what is a non-renewable resource
a resource that cannot be replaced faster than it is used and will run out ( fossil fuels)
what is a renewable resource
a resource that can be replaced faster than it is used and can be used again without running out ( wind, solar, tidal, hydro electric)
soils and agriculture
agriculture in the uk includes arable farming, cattle farming, hill sheep farming and mixed farming. the kind of agriculture practiced in an area depends on soil type and fertility, climate and terrain. south and east Asia, north America and south America produce the most food globally
forestry
timber is one of the main products from forests. the wood is used for building and for produce such as furniture and paper. the main type of trees used are timber and conifers because they can cope well with wet and cold weather and grow quickly. Mainly in Canada, northern Europe, Russia, south America, west Africa and southeast Asia
fossil fuels
the UK has reserves of coal, oil and gas which have formed underneath layers of sedimentary rock over millions of years. they are burnt in power stations to generate energy. however, only a very small amount of coal is now mined in the UK.
most oil-Saudi Arabia, Russia, USA
most gas- Russia, USA
most coal- china
water
water is used directly by industry, in agriculture and in the home, but it is also used for generation of energy in hydro-electric power. north America, south America and northern Europe have the largest global water resources
rocks and minerals
rocks like limestone, slate and granite are important materials for construction. rocks and minerals are dug out of the ground in quarries. the highest concentration of minerals are found in west America, southern Africa and central Asia.
what is a water deficit
not enough water ( use the words supply and demand in answer)
what is a water surplus
more than enough water ( use the words supply and demand in answer)
precipitation
moisture falling from the atmosphere includes rain, hail, sleet and snow.
evaporation
when water changes state from a liquid to a gas ( water vapour)
transpiration
the loss of water from leaves by evaporation
physical water scarcity
when a country or place physically doesn’t have enough water
economic water scarcity
when a country or place doesn’t have enough money to extract or distribute water to people
