Water Heaters Flashcards
(22 cards)
What does a water heater do?
Tankless and Tanked
Heats water
What is attached to the cold water inlet that bring cold city water and puts it at the bottom of a tanked water heater, and prevents cold water being sent to hot taps?
Dip tube
When does a tankless water heater start heating water?
When a “hot” tap is opened, a flow sensor closes and the heating preocess begins.
What part is in a tanked water heater that acts as a sacrificial component?
Anode Rod
What does a burner do?
The BURNER evenly blends the fuel and air to produce an efficient blue flame that produces very little CO
How does a direct spark ignitor work to lit the air/fuel mixture?
It works by stepping up the voltage very high to create an arc, that arc is very hot which lights the air fuel mixture instantaneously
Evenly blends air and fuel before ignition.
Burner
Reaches 2400F to instantaneously ignite the air fuel mixture
Hot surface ignitor
Creates a high voltage potential to jump electricity across a rod to instantaneously ignite the air fuel mixture at the main burner.
DIRECT spark ignitor
not just a spark ignitor
I am commonly used on a atmospheric water heater to hold open the pilot valve.
ThermoCOUPLE
I am used only on a 120V system to sense the fire
Flame sensor
Not a thermocouple/powerpile
I am used to control and power the circuit.
POWERpile/Thermopile
I am an inducer motor on a water heater
POWER VENTER
How many heat exchangers does a CX boiler have?
2
ss Firetube HX
&
Brazed Plate HX
HX= Heat Exchanger
What is the turndown rate of a VX boiler?
6.5/1 Turndown ratio
What is the Turndown rate of the CX Boiler?
10/1 Turndown ratio
I am a safety switch paired with an inducer motor to prove the vent is not blocked.
Pressure Switch
What is between the water heater(atmospheric) and the C-Vent
DRAFT HOOD
Lets in dilution air to slow the speed of flue gases
Allows flue gas to leave the combustion chamber
Prevents flue gas from back drafting into the combustion chamber
What is this part?
What does it do?
Thermocouple,
It is a SAFETY used to PROVE a pilot flame is present.
It sits in the fire to GENERATE milivolts. 25/30mV
Used to hold open a gas valve
What is this part?
What does it do?
Pressure and temperature relief valve
IT IS A SAFETY.
It relases water from the tank to relieve either HIGH temperature over 210F or HIGH pressure over 150 PSIG
What is this part?
What does it do?
Flame Rectification Sensor,
This is a SAFETY
It grounds itself in the flame and PROVES CROSS BURNER IGNITION
What is this part?
How does this one operate?
Electronic Water Heater Gas Valve
Uses a thermoPILE/PowerPILE to power/control it
