Water, Life, And Human Body Flashcards
(30 cards)
What is an intermolecular force?
Force that holds molecules together
What makes water polar?
The molecule has lopsided charges
What is Cohesion?
An intermolecular force between LIKE molecules
What is adhesion?
An intermolecular force between UNLIKE molecules
What is surface tension?
Characteristic of water caused by water molecules bonding with each other at the surface
What is capillary action?
Characteristic of water caused by cohesion and adhesion that allows water to move against the force of gravity in a small tube
Other characteristics of water (4)
Universal solvent
High specific heat
Ice is less dense than water
Solid, liquid, and gas at Earthly temperatures
Why is water considered the universal solvent?
Dissolves more than anything in the universe
Seven characteristics of life
Uses energy Reproduce Grows Has cells Different levels of organization Respond to its evironment Adapts to its environment
What does it mean to be a characteristic of life?
Something you need to be alive
Levels of organization to build a multi-cellular organism? (9)
Atoms Molecules Macromolecules Organelles Cells Tissue Organ Organ system Organism
Higher levels of organization when interacting with environment? (5)
Population- same species interacting
Community- other living things interacting
Ecosystem- living and non-living things interacting
Biome- interacting with other Ecosystems
Biosphere- all biomes on Earths surface interacting
What is biology?
Study of life
What is an organism?
A living person with all characteristics of life
What is anatomy?
Study of structure
What is physiology?
Study of function
List the eight body systems
Skeletal- structure and support
Digestive- covert food into energy/ remove waste
Muscular- movement
Respiratory- oxygen to blood/ remove carbon
Cirrculatory- takes oxygen to cells
Endocrine- releases hormones/ tells organs
Excretory- remove waste
Nervous- tells body what to do
What are the three types of muscles?
Smooth- in organs (involuntary)
Cardiac- in heart (involuntary)
Skeletal- attached to bones (voluntary)
What does it mean to be voluntary?
You tell your body to move it. If you don’t tell your body to move, it won’t.
What does it mean to involuntary?
Your body does it for you. You dot have to think about it, it just happens.
How do skeletal muscles attach to bones?
Tendons attach the muscle of from end of a bone, to another end of a different bone
How do skeletal muscles work together?
Muscles work in pairs. When one muscles flexes, the other returns to its original lengths
Organs in skeletal system? (3)
Bones, ligaments, tendons
Organs in muscular system? (2)
Tendons, muscles
