Waves Flashcards
(28 cards)
Light
form of energy that travels by electromagnetic waves
Reflection
the way in which light bounces off surfaces
angle of incidence
angle between the normal and the incident ray
angle of reflection
angle between the normal and reflected ray
Parallax
relative movement of two objects due to the movement of the observer
Laws of reflection
- The incident ray, normal and reflected ray are all in the same plane
- The angle of reflection is equal to angle of incidence
real image
actual intersection of light rays
virtual image
apparent intersection of light rays
Waves
A wave is a disturbance that carries energy from one place to another
Transverse Waves
Transverse waves are waves in which the direction of vibration is perpendicular to the propogation of the wave
Longitudinal Waves
Longitudinal waves are waves in which the direction of vibration is parallel to the propogation of the wave
Mechanical Waves
Mechanical waves are the vibration of particles
Electromagnetic Waves
Electromagnetic waves are the disturbance of electric and magnetic fields
Wavelength(λ)
Wavelength(λ) is the distance from a point on a wave to the corresponding point on an adjacent wave
Frequency(f)
Frequency(f) is the number of waves passing a point per second
Amplitude(A)
Amplitude(A) is the maximum distance from the undisturbed position
Velocity of a wave(c)
The velocity of a wave is the product of wavelength and frequency(c=fλ)
Reflection
Reflection is when a wave bounces off an object in it’s path
Refraction
Refraction is the changing of direction of a wave when it goes from one medium to another
Diffraction
Diffraction is the spreading out of a wave into the space beyond a barrier
Interference
Interference is the addition of two or more waves, forming a single resultant wave
Constructive Interference
Constructive interference is when two or more waves combine, forming a single wave of greater amplitude than the source waves
Coherent wave sources
Wave sources are coherent when they produce waves of the same frequency that are either in phase or a constant phase difference apart
Waves in phase
Waves are in phase when the crests from one source meets crests from another
