Oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. E.g EM waves.

Oscillations parallel to the direction of energy transfer. E.g Sound waves.

Vibrating electric field generates a vibrating magnetic field, which also generates a vibrating electric field further away.
-Can travel through space without the need of a substance to go through.
